The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
In my Methods of Writing class, I worked with two students in a 6-week writer’s workshop to help develop their writing. Using Maine’s State Teaching Standard as a guide, I used my understanding of my students and how they learn to create lessons that helped them become better writers. Recognizing their individual learning patterns and using them to further their writing development.
Understanding how students learn and recognizing that they learn individually makes crafting lessons easier and more effective. As a teacher, I must know my students academically but also understand their home life and how that affects their learning. Knowing the whole student and how they learn makes me a more effective teacher and enables me to better assist their development.
