Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

In my student teaching, I created lessons using my knowledge of fractions and student learning to create lessons that used technology. Using Maine Common Core Teaching Standard 11 as a guide, I created a virtual game for students to use technology to teach and advance their learning. This gave students a creative way to experience fractions and show their learning.

Creating a digital game for students to use their fraction knowledge was very engaging. Students were able to use the Promethean Board as well as their personal Chromebooks to play this game. This gave them a different way to advance their understanding of fractions in a creative and fun way.

In my Supporting 21st Century Learning Through Technology class, I wrote a brief essay about how we consume digital media today. Using Maine Common Core Teaching Standard 11 as a guide, I looked at how technology can advance learning and creativity for students. This helps to show how technology can be used in the classroom for face-to-face and virtual environments.

Examining how I interact with digital media in my own life, I worked to understand how students are shaped by it. Technology is in all aspects of our lives and can be a major distraction in the classroom if a teacher lets it. Social media tends to lower attention spans and increases online bulling. However, technology enables students to interact with content and experiences in new ways never before possible. Finding lessons that will increase a student’s engagement and understanding of a topic is the most important factor when trying to integrate technology.

In my Supporting 21st Century Learning Through Technology class, I designed a lesson on creating a podcast for fourth-grade students. Using Maine Common Core Teaching Standard 11 as a guide, I used the app Garageband to help students advance their creativity to share virtual stories. Students were able to use technology to learn how to share information in new ways.

Making podcasts with the fourth-grade students was an informative project. Students were excited and engaged in creating their stories. I worked to overcome some obstacles, such as timing, keeping students on task, and technical problems. The project showed how this could be a great differentiation for students who are struggling with typing or writing traditional essays. Finding ways for students to use technology to adapt more traditional lessons was an exciting way to expand my student’s learning.
